Anne Gill
Anne is our caller. As a very experienced barn dance caller Anne can handle all situations in her calm manner and loves the challenge of getting non dancers of all ages to feel at ease and most of all to enjoy their special evening. She is a founder member of Teign ladies Morris and also used to dance with Mummers pride Rapper team. When she gets the chance to dance herself Irish Set is now her passion.
Anne is very involved in the organisation of Teignmouth Mid Summer Folk Festival and also on the committee of Totnes Folk Song Club, and (as if that’s not enough) she is Chairperson of the Devon Folk Committee.
Steve Gill
Steve is our lead instrumentalist. He first fell in love with folk music when he was introduced to folk band Fairport Convention at school. Since those early days Steve has played for various Morris dance sides and is often called upon as a stand in. As well as barn dances he loves playing for Irish Set dancing especially slides and polkas. He also enjoys singing, mainly with his Anglo Concertina, gaining inspiration from singers such as Martyn Wyndham-Read and Barry Dransfield. His main love being traditional folk songs.
Sophia has been playing for 25 years, gaining grade 8 violin; leading to a Bachelor of Performing Arts at Leeds College of Music. Since returning to Devon, Sophia taught music for 7 years, at a special needs college, before changing careers. Sophia enjoys playing a variety of classical music and folk music. Sophia started playing folk music with Frobishers Maggot, before becoming a founder member of ‘The MoonCoin Ceilidh Band’.
We are very lucky to have Nick in the band. As well as playing the bodhron (Irish drum) Nick is one of the UK’s finest exponents on the uillean (Irish) pipes touring extensively throughout Europe, the UK and the USA with top band “Last night’s fun” as well as performancing at the Edinburgh Tattooo and with “Show of hands” at the Royal Albert hall.
Andy is a founder member of the band, providing the driving rhythm on bouzouki, banjo and guitar. He is also regularly in demand as a solo performer touring festivals and clubs throughout the UK giving concerts and workshops on guitar and bouzouki technique’s. He has 3 solo CD’s.
